OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

breathe properly · sleep well · thrive through life

WHAT IS OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is a program used to correct the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles. It involves strengthening of the tongue and orofacial muscles by teaching individuals how to engage the muscles in the appropriate position.

WHEN IS MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY NEEDED?

Myofunctional therapy is often needed when we identify the presence of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD). Examples of OMDs include one or a combination of the following:

  • Mouth breathing or breathing with lips apart

  • Tongue thrust swallowing pattern

  • Low or forward resting tongue posture (may be due to tongue tie)

  • Presence of oral habits (such as thumb sucking, nail biting, etc)

MY GOALS AS YOUR THERAPIST:

  • Teach the importance of nasal breathing all day and all night, proper lip seal and tongue posture, and how to accomplish these goals through daily exercises for the face and mouth

  • Help my patients integrate therapy into their daily schedule

  • Make therapy as fun and educational as possible so that each of my patients can successfully acheive their goals

  • Collaborate with all necessary healthcare providers to give my patients the best possible outcome for life long health
